Listed hedge fund Man Group has announced the promotion of one of its sustainability strategists to become a co-head of responsible investment.

Jason Mitchell will take up the new role alongside Steven Desmyter, working across the company’s brands to ensure that investment processes and policies are correctly identifying operational, governance and strategic risks. Both Mitchell and Desmyter will co-chair Man Group’s Responsible Investment Committee.

He will report to Sandy Rattray, the company’s chief investment officer and will develop the group’s impact, thematic and norms-based investment strategies in addition to incorporating ESG criteria across asset classes and multi-asset solutions.

Mitchell currently serves on the Advisory Board of Imperial College Business School’s Centre for Climate Finance and Investment, and is a member of the PRI Academic Advisory Committee, the PRI Macroeconomic Risk Advisory Committee, the Investment Association’s Sustainability and Responsible Investment Committee and numerous industry and governmental working groups.

He chaired the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Hedge Funds Advisory Committee from 2014 to 2018.

In a media statement, Man Group explained that Mitchell will also advise on funds where ESG, impact investing, engagement and norms-based screening represent a principal feature of the strategy.

The company said that Mitchell was previously a sustainability strategist at Man Group and a member of the Responsible Investment Committee. He has more than 15 years of experience in portfolio management, and has been “actively involved” in responsible investment at Man Group since 2010.

In a statement, Sandy Rattray, CIO at Man Group, said: “Jason’s promotion recognises his long-standing commitment to sustainability and contributions to the firm in this area.

“Along with Steven Desmyter, he will lead efforts to further enhance responsible investment at Man Group and promote sustainability across a range of funds and investment engines.”
